Becoming a WAC Trainer

Trainers seeking approval to deliver the Waste Awareness Certificate (standard version)must complete the following steps:

  1. Attend a Waste Awareness Certificate course through an approved centre.
This is required in order that any potential trainer has experienced the course material as a delegate, and therefore has an understanding of and is familiar of, the concepts, aims, objectives and material content before entering the approval process.
  2. Complete the 'Approved Trainer Application Form and submit to CIWM for review.
The application form is designed to prompt you for information and evidence of the key skills required to become an approved trainer of the WAC - particularly around waste management knowledge and training ability/experience. Before committing potential trainers to attendance of a Trainer Assessment Day, and the costs of trainer approval, the application form will first be reviewed internally by CIWM to ensure that the application is relevant. Acceptance onto the Trainer Assessment Day however, does not presume approval, just that the application seems relevant on paper.
Please note that applicants must be a member of the CIWM before proceeding with the trainer approval process. Those not already members are required to apply, even if just at Affiliate level (currently £109.00 per annum - 2011 rate). The requirement to be a member of the CIWM is to ensure that all trainers are being kept up to date with changes affecting the waste and resources management industry - particularly for those working in periphery industries.
  3. Invitation to attend Trainer Assessment Day, and payment taken for trainer approval process
Once the potential trainer has accepted a place on a Trainer Assessment Day, payment will be taken for the trainer approval process and terms and conditions for cancellation of the Trainer Assessment Day will apply.
  4. Attend Trainer Assessment Day - Provisional Approval Stage
The applicant will deliver a previously assigned and prepared section of the Waste Awareness Certificate presentation in front of other applicants and CIWM assessors at a Trainer Assessment Day (usually held at CIWM HQ in Northampton). Provisional approval will be granted subject to skills demonstrated.
  5. Deliver a course - Full Approval Stage
The provisionally approved trainer will deliver a full course with real delegates in front of a visiting CIWM assessor. Full approval will be granted if all skill sets are demonstrated effectively.
Please note

All trainers must be affiliated to a registered WAC delivery centre - for more information on setting up a delivery centre please click here

All our WAC trainers are assessed against the same standards and feedback is given against these standards at key points in the approval process as well as part of ongoing QA processes. To view the standards, please click here

For those trainers wishing to also deliver the construction and/or healthcare versions of the course, full approval must already be granted for delivery of the standard version. An additional application form must be completed and a 1 hour (approx) briefing attended. There is no additional charge for this QA process or for the additional materials once approval is granted.
